Attention, you can learn Slovenian words at the end of this post!
We’re hungry after scaling the cliffs in our last post, so we’re headed to Slovenia to taste the famous Slovenian pastry, Prekmurska gibanica.
Several types of gibanica are made in Slovenia, but the one native to Prekmurje is the most renowned. Prekmurje is Slovenia’s easternmost region and it borders Hungary, which is why Hungarian is one of the region’s officially recognized languages.
The baked good itself is like a layered pastry, in which poppy seed, cottage cheese, nut, and apple fillings are placed in between sheets of dough.
Due to the cost of its ingredients, only the wealthy were able to enjoy baking gibanica. It was once baked only at important family events (e.g. at baptisms or weddings), but they’re now also indispensable from Christmas or Easter meals.
We’ve baked some already; it’s very tasty! 😋
