Let’s head back to Europe for the next weekend, so that we can celebrate the Swiss national holiday together on the 1st of August.
The Swiss Confederation was established 729 years ago, in 1291. In commemoration, this day has been declared a national holiday, known as Bundesfeiertag, or Fête nationale in French, Festa nazionale in Italian and Festa naziunala in Rhaeto-romance.
This day the entire country is dressed in national colours, even the flowerbeds. The day starts off with a celebratory brunch, where locals and visitors are surrounded by delicious national cuisine, including classics such as milk-loaf. 🍞
In the evening, children roam around with lanterns and have traditional Swiss sausage (Cerverlat) for dinner. By this time, 4-5-meter tall bonfires have been lit all around the country, some even located on mountain tops.
Fireworks mark the end of this night in many parts of the country. 🎉
