Japanese Valentine’s Day

We asked one of our Japanese teachers about the Japanese Valentine’s Day.

“What makes Japanese Valentine’s Day so special? In Japan, on 14 February, it is not the men who give gifts to the women, but the other way round.

This gift is usually chocolate or some other chocolate confectionery. But what is also special is that Japanese ladies not only give gifts to their sweethearts on this day, but also to their male colleagues and friends.

After Valentine’s Day, men return the gift 1 month later. This day, 14 March, is called White Day, and on this day men usually give white chocolate as a reciprocal gift.”
